There are two school boards in Barrie: the Simcoe County District School Board, and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. Simcoe County District School Board has twenty-five elementary schools and four high schools in Barrie; many of which offer French Immersion or after-school care for students. There are three high schools and thirteen elementary schools in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board which also offer many benefits such as French Immersion, specialist high skills major programs, and after school programs. Barrie is also home to the campus of Georgian College.
Springwater, Oro-Medonte, Innisfil, and Essa are members of the same school boards, and house both elementary and high school of high caliber, as Barrie does. These towns provide an excellent region-wide community both for the schools and for other residents in the area. Springwater hosts a variety of events and fairs, such as the Fall Fair and the Maple Syrup Festival. Oro-Medonte is a diverse community that takes art and culture seriously. Notably, the town has recently reopened the doors of its African Church as of 2016. In Innisfil, there are numerous community programs in which to get involved, and a farmers’ market can be found every Thursday at the rec complex. Essa hosts a large salmon derby in the fall to engage fishers from near and far!
All over Barrie and its surrounding area, there are networks of trails giving hikers, cyclists, and walkers alike a place to explore. This region of Central Ontario is rich in nature and boasts beautiful shoreline views. Even those who do not tend to enjoy the outdoors cannot deny the beauty of nature found there! There is an abundance of parks in these towns: some recreation-centred, and others more nature-focused.
